Track a hardware wallet with its xpub, ypub or zpub
An extended public key lets an app see every address in a wallet, and the wallet's balance and history, without being able to spend anything. It is how you watch cold storage from your phone.
xpub, ypub and zpub
- xpub: legacy addresses starting with
1(BIP44). - ypub: nested SegWit addresses starting with
3(BIP49). - zpub: native SegWit addresses starting with
bc1q(BIP84). Most modern wallets use this one.
Your wallet software shows the key under a name such as "extended public key", "account xpub" or
"export xpub". Never share anything that starts with xprv, yprv or
zprv, or your seed words: those can spend your coins.
Why watch instead of adding each address
Hardware wallets give you a new receive address every time and move change to fresh addresses. Tracking single addresses misses coins quickly. With the extended public key, an app can derive every address, find the ones with history and add them up, so the total always matches your wallet.
Privacy
An extended public key reveals all past and future addresses of that account. Only give it to software you trust. In Bitcoin Tracker the key is stored only on your iPhone: the app derives the addresses on the device and looks them up at public block explorers (Blockstream, with mempool.space as a fallback). The key itself is never sent anywhere.
How to add one in Bitcoin Tracker
- Copy the xpub, ypub or zpub from your wallet software.
- In the app, open Portfolio and add a wallet.
- Paste the key. The app scans receive and change addresses and shows the combined balance and transactions.
